REAL LIFE RAILWAYS - UK - WELSHPOOL & LLANFAIR NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY

Published on 3 September 2013

On the weekend of Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September 2013 the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway held a Steam Gala to celebrate their Golden Anniversary-- 50 years of passenger operations as a Narrow Gauge Preservation line. It proved to be a very special weekend for the narrow gauge enthusiast with an intensive timetable on both days and all of their working locomotives in steam. This narrow gauge line is 2'6" gauge.

This footage shows "No. 1 The Earl" making up a mixed train before departing from Welshpool. This 0-6-0T steam locomotive, along with it's sister engine "No.2 The Countess")  were both built by Beyer, Peacock and Co in 1902 and  delivered  new to the Welshpool & Llanfair where they remained in service on the line from 1903 until its closure by BR in 1956.

On subsequent preservation of the line both engines returned to their original home from 1961 onwards and are still running today.
